Building an IoT-ready BESS with Advantech’s Edge-to-Cloud Solution

Background

As part of global efforts to reduce carbon emissions, a vanadium production facility in China implemented a Waste Heat to Power (WHP) system to convert excess thermal energy from its operations into electricity. This system is integrated with a 1.5MW Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) to store and manage energy efficiently.

To support this initiative, Shaanxi Fengyuan Vanadium Technology Development Co. Ltd partnered with Lanware, a provider of industrial IoT and energy management solutions, to develop a centralized energy management system.

Lanware’s solution enables real-time monitoring, intelligent control, load balancing, and peak shaving—helping the facility improve energy efficiency, reduce operational costs, and meet sustainability goals.

System Requirements

A modern Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) requires seamless integration and monitoring of multiple subsystems, including:

  • Battery Management System (BMS)
  • Power Conversion System (PCS)
  • Power Distribution Systems
  • Environmental Control Systems (ECS)
  • Smart Energy Meters
  • Access Control & Surveillance Systems

These systems operate on diverse industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, CANbus, and DL/T645. Therefore, a robust IoT gateway is essential to unify communication, process data, and enable centralized monitoring.

Additionally, a reliable and high-speed network infrastructure is required to ensure real-time data transmission between on-site systems and cloud-based monitoring platforms.

Lanware Solution Architecture

Lanware designed and deployed a scalable industrial IoT architecture tailored for energy storage and power management environments. The solution includes:

  • Industrial Edge Controllers for real-time data acquisition and control
  • Multi-protocol IoT Gateways for seamless communication integration
  • Remote I/O Modules for field-level device connectivity
  • Industrial Networking Devices for stable and secure data transmission
  • Industrial Monitoring Systems for visualization and alerts

This architecture ensures efficient data flow from field devices to local servers and cloud platforms, enabling centralized control and analytics.

System Implementation

The Lanware-powered energy management system operates as follows:

  • Collects real-time data from all connected subsystems
  • Converts multiple communication protocols into a unified data format
  • Executes intelligent control strategies (e.g., battery charge/discharge optimization)
  • Enables remote monitoring through cloud-based dashboards
  • Supports integration with surveillance and access control systems

The system is designed for scalability, allowing expansion to support large-scale deployments with high I/O requirements.

For smaller energy systems, Lanware provides compact and cost-effective gateway solutions that deliver the same reliability and functionality on a reduced scale.
